Meet Lwandile Mnyango – From Lawhill to a Nautical Studies Degree at CPUT
Lwandile Mnyango’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when opportunity meets determination.
Originally from Durban, Lwandile worked hard throughout his time at Lawhill Maritime Centre (LMC) and achieved excellent results in his final Grade 12 exams. After a well-earned break at home, he has returned to Cape Town to continue pursuing his dream of a career at sea.
Lwandile has officially started his three-year Nautical Studies Degree at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). His studies are funded through the Bursary Fund, providing him with the support he needs to focus fully on his education and development.
Settling into Student Life in Cape Town
Lwandile is currently sharing accommodation with two other bursary students who are studying Marine Engineering. They are based at Peak Studios in Observatory, an option chosen to provide a stable and supportive living environment while he continues his studies.
To support his online learning, Lwandile is currently able to access the computer centre at his residence while the Bursary Fund works to secure a laptop for him — an important tool that will help him study effectively and stay on track academically.
Support Behind the Journey
We are grateful for the community of partners and supporters who have contributed to Lwandile’s progress. A sponsorship of R45,000 from Newlands Rotary has supported his first year, and additional support has been made possible through fundraising initiatives such as the Marine Bursary Golf Day.
Tertiary education comes with real costs. The estimated cost of Lwandile’s studies is approximately R160,000 per year, and the long-term goal is to secure a partner sponsor to support him as he continues through his degree.
At Amanzi Wethu e.V., we are proud to walk this journey with Lwandile and to support maritime education for young people who are working towards a better future through discipline, education, and opportunity.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Together, we are sending the lift back down.
